Quick and Easy Dresser Upgrade

SOMETIMES ALL YOU NEED IS A SIMPLE REFRESH TO UPDATE YOUR SPACE

I can’t believe it’s almost Fall and I’m starting to pull out my fall colored pillows and blankets! Updating my space for the next season got me thinking about other things that I might do to update my space without completely overhauling. This time, I decided to upgrade my dresser!

This is the Ikea Hemnes Dresser when I first bought it.

The Dresser

I got the Hemnes dresser from Ikea many years ago! It’s a pretty simple dresser but I wanted to add a little pizazz to it so I added pulls instead of knobs. I guess that would have been my first dresser upgrade. These pulls were the long bars that were in style at the time. I wanted them to be gold too but couldn’t afford them so I found the cheapest pulls I could and I painted them gold.

It was a lot harder to find the size pulls I needed to line everything up so I ended up spending more money than I should have. For this next update, I didn’t want to make that mistake again.

Inspiration

I have two sources of inspiration for this dresser. The first is from an Instagram post by Megan at theblushhome. She has the same dresser and kept all the knobs except for the top 4. She used leather pulls instead and I always thought they looked super cute. So when it finally came time to think about my dresser upgrade, I immediately thought of her home.

My second source of inspiration comes from the one and only, AngelaRoseHome. She did an Ikea hack for this dresser that involved changing all the knobs to these sleek black metal pulls that tuck onto the top of the dresser. I thought that looked super cute and maybe it would look good with the leather pulls!

This is the Instagram post that Angela at AngelaRoseHome posted that inspired me to use the black pulls! I kinda wish I had this darker dresser and not the white one but we can save painting it for another DIY.

Once I removed all the old dirty gold-painted bars, I started to install the new pulls. The leather ones were easy enough since there were already old holes for the center of the drawers. The black metal pulls needed new holes but after measuring the knob locations and centering all the black pulls, install was a breeze.

It was pretty easy filling the holes with white spackle. The white of the spackle is similar enough to the white of the dresser that I don’t think it is that noticeable. The other option would be to find a close enough white paint and hope you cant tell.

Supplies

Voilà

With some much needed cleaning/organizing, and a little bit of styling with pieces I already had, I have a whole new upgraded space!
